Key Scriptures:
Ephesians 6:10–12; Ephesians 6:13–17; John 16:33
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers…” — Ephesians 6:12
INTRODUCTION: THE REAL BATTLEFIELD
Marriage and family are not only emotional and relational institutions; they are spiritual territories. Many of the battles couples face in the home are not ordinary disagreements—they are spiritual confrontations manifesting in natural ways.
Jesus made it clear:
“In this world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” — John 16:33
Victory is possible—but only when we recognize the nature of the battle.
Many of the battles we fight in marriage are actually spiritual battles that we ignorantly fight physically with anger, silence, withdrawal, insults, or emotional distance.
But anyone who fights a spiritual battle with physical weapons is bound to lose.
HOW SPIRITUAL ATTACKS MANIFEST IN THE HOME
Spiritual attacks often begin subtly but escalate rapidly if not discerned early.
What starts as a little issue becomes a big problem.
Suddenly:
• Your spouse begins to appear detestable to you.
• You no longer agree on anything.
• You don’t feel like spending time together.
• You start comparing your spouse with members of the opposite sex.
• You begin to entertain alternatives.
• You engage in behaviors that weaken the health of your home.
• You gradually abandon spiritual disciplines—prayer, the Word, fellowship—that once sustained your marriage.
These are often not coincidences; they are manifestations.
THE REALITY OF SPIRITUAL ARROWS
You may not believe that spiritual forces or supernatural arrows can be sent to scatter a marriage, but disbelief does not negate reality.
Scripture says:
“…the fiery darts of the wicked.” — Ephesians 6:16
Possible Sources of These Arrows
• People you may have offended knowingly or unknowingly.
• Those who envy the love, unity, or peace in your home.
• Individuals who desire you or your spouse.
• Family members, yours or your spouse’s who feel threatened by the strength of your marital bond.
• Competitors who believe your effectiveness will collapse if your home is destroyed.
• Unbroken curses or unresolved covenants.
• Past sins or immoral relationships, yours or those of previous generations.
Illustration:
A man married for twelve years without a child sought prayer. It was revealed that a former girlfriend he impregnated and abandoned had cursed him during childbirth. Until restitution and repentance were made, the spiritual door remained open.
This reminds us that spiritual causes often require spiritual solutions.
FIGHTING PRINCIPALITIES AND POWERS—THE BIBLICAL WAY.
The battle against principalities and powers cannot be won emotionally, intellectually, or physically. It must be fought spiritually.
Paul admonishes us:
“Put on the whole armour of God…” — Ephesians 6:13
When You Notice Abnormal Patterns in Your Family:
1. Ensure You Are Walking with God
A strong spiritual walk is your first line of defense.
2. Pray for Discernment
Ask God to reveal the true root of the problem—not just the symptoms.
3. Pray for Divine Instructions
Seek wisdom on what steps to take and when to take them.
4. Make Restitution Where Necessary
If a wrong must be corrected, obedience unlocks freedom.
5. Pray for Deliverance
Some battles require spiritual warfare prayers and fasting.
6. Break Inherited Curses
Declare liberty over yourself and your family using the authority of Scripture.
7. Watch and Pray Continually
Vigilance prevents surprise attacks.
DON’T WAIT FOR WAR BEFORE YOU PREPARE
Wisdom says: don’t wait until the storm begins before building an ark.
Daily:
• Soak your spouse and children in the blood of Jesus.
• Declare your home a forbidden territory for the devil.
• Speak peace, unity, love, and divine protection over your household.
• Reinforce spiritual disciplines consistently.
Your home must be spiritually fortified long before conflict appears.
CONCLUSION: YOUR HOME IS A SPIRITUAL TERRITORY
Your home is not neutral ground, it is either guarded or invaded.
It is either covered or exposed.
It is either spiritually alive or spiritually vulnerable.
But hear this good news:
“Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.” — Ephesians 6:10
When you recognize the battle, wear the whole armor of God, and fight spiritually, your home will stand.
May your household be preserved, protected, and empowered—
and may every spiritual manifestation against your home bow to the name of Jesus. Amen.
