MARRIAGE STILL WORKS DEVOTIONAL.
Day 11: MARRIAGE STILL WORKS…WHEN UNDERSTANDING IS PRACTICED.
Key Scripture:
“Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge…” 1 Peter 3:7.
(Understanding strengthens relationships.)
DEVOTIONAL INSIGHT.
Understanding is one of the most powerful yet underrated tools in marriage. Many conflicts are not rooted in bad intentions, but in misunderstanding. One partner speaks or acts from their perspective, while the other interprets it differently. Without understanding, small issues can escalate into major conflicts.
Practicing understanding means:
• Listening with the intent to truly hear
• Considering your spouse’s perspective
• Responding with empathy rather than assumption
Understanding requires patience. It means slowing down, asking questions, and seeking clarity instead of reacting quickly.
When understanding is present:
• Communication improves
• Conflicts reduce
• Emotional connection deepens
A lack of understanding creates distance, but genuine effort to understand builds closeness.
REAL LIFE REFLECTION.
A couple frequently argued because each felt unheard. Conversations often turned into debates, with both trying to prove their point. One day, they decided to try a different approach, each person would speak while the other listened without interrupting, then repeat what they heard before responding.
At first, it felt awkward, but soon, something changed. They began to feel heard. Misinterpretations reduced. Tension eased. They realized that many of their past conflicts were not due to major issues, but simple misunderstandings.
As they practiced understanding, their relationship improved significantly.
ACTION POINT. (Love in Practice)
Today:
• Listen to your spouse without interrupting or rushing to respond
Seek to understand before being understood.
TALK ABOUT IT TOGETHER.
Do you feel heard and understood when we communicate?
PRAYER.
Father, give us understanding hearts. Help us to listen with patience, respond with wisdom, and relate with empathy. Remove every barrier to true understanding in our marriage, in Jesus’ name.
CLOSING TRUTH.
Marriage still works…when understanding is consistently practiced.
