SERVANT LEADERSHIP.

Luke 22:26
‘But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve’

In our reference scripture for today, Jesus revealed to his disciples His own model for leadership; the servant leadership model. In this leadership model, you don’t oppress those you are leading by making them to serve you, on the contrary, it is the leader that serves. In other words, leadership is not aimed at grabbing power, but to serve.

According to the Wycliffe Bible Translators, a servant leader is expected to possess the following traits:

  • Integrity (Prov. 21:3)- True servant leader can’t cheat.
  • Humility (Jn.3:27-30)- The ability to acknowledge others before yourself; readiness to learn from others.
  • Flexibility (Philippians 4:12-13)- The ability to adapt to the realities on ground instead of anger or panic.
  • Resilience (Heb.12:1-2)- The ability to keep going even when hope could have been lost.
  • Stewardship(1Pet. 4:10)- The ability to render account concerning resources human and materials placed at your dispsal.
  • Empathy (Rom.12:15)- The ability to put yourself in the shoes of your followers and feel for them.

How beautiful our society would have been if we are governed by this leadership model. What a different experience it would have been even if our churches and homes are led the same way. Now look inwards, which kind of leadership are you providing at your level? At your place of work, at home, church and the society how are you leading?

Receive the grace to lead right in Jesus name.

    MARRIAGE FOCUS.
Discuss the above in relation with the way things are done in your home. Either as husband or wife you are a leader at home. If as a husband, you are always insisting on being the head without listening to the views of your wife and children, it follows that you are probably not an example of the servant leader.
